Success: Beyond Talents and Planning

 Success: Beyond Talents and Planning

Thursday, the fourth day of the month of February in the year 2021 was exceptionally great with various activities in the National Youth Service Corp's (NYSC) orientation camp. That night, as the Miss NYSC and Mr. Macho pageantry was scheduled, I had lost interest in the program so I picked my phone to get updates on trending news. The first that popped up on Opera mini news was an inspiring news on the great come back by Barcelona FC against Granada in the Copa Del Rey quarter final. The news clearly stated that Barcelona came from behind to win the match 5-2 despite the obstacles encountered from the opponent.

Without doubt, Barcelona is one of the  greatest football clubs existing and the captain of the team, Lionel Messi is considered to be the GOAT of football, meaning he is the greatest of all time in the history of football. This is very true as Messi has many prizes to show for this claim. He has up to six Ballon d O'r, and has been crowned world best footballer several times. Some of the teammates too have great football history, including Antonio Griezaman, one time world cup winner.

However, none of these advantages, nor records was able to give Barcelona victory from behind. Granada is also a very great club in the Spanish La Liga but not in the level of Barcelona. But, this same Granada almost stole away Barcelona's joy like Athletic Bibao did in the last Spanish Super Cup Final. Barcelona was two goals down and played draw up to the first  ninety minutes, but, they still won. The big question is "How"?

Those who watched the match will testify that it was not the records, skills nor talents that helped Barcelona win the match but, persistence, wisdom, teamwork, leadership and audacity or faith. Just like Barcelona, there are times when things or plans don't go the way we plan them but we must ensure we are persistent and dogged in pursuing the courses we believe are right and virtuous. The reality of life is that challenges come to test our visions and try our passions as gold pass through fire. To fulfill our visions, therefore, we must learn to remained focused on a vision until it's achieved.

However, problems at times reveal our mistakes and inadequacies. Challenges quickly tell us of the areas we need to work on in our plans. Our course maybe great, true and virtuous but sometimes, they lack the principles that will ensure success. Therefore, wisdom is required in achieving and sustaining success during and after failures. The Word of God says, "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding". Proverbs  4:7 . In all our courses, we must learn, unlearn and relearn the wisdom that will ensure our success. Jesus Christ is our excellent wisdom, therefore, when we are not recording success in our businesses as expected, we must be humble to go back to God give us the wisdom required. The Word of God and prayer have also be proven to be powerful sources of wisdom in all endeavours of life. Wisdom at times will demand we make some changes in plans, adjusting ourselves to the wisdoms gotten from God. In the case of Barcelona and Granada, Roeman, the head coach of Barcelona had to change tactics, by bringing additional attackers because at some points, goals were needed badly.

Leadership is also an inevitable factor in achieving success or come back after failures. Many things were said of how Lionel Messi encouraged and coordinated the Barcelona team to ensure the come back against the Granada Club. Since, most of us will have to work with other people in an organisation, either formal or informal, the leaders of our organizations must not only be ready to sacrifice but must also be lead their team from the front, that is lead by example.

"No tree can make a forest". This saying is very true today.  Messi is indeed one of the greatest football players but, the come back against Granada was only possible because of the high level of the teamwork in the Barcelona team. Barca's team has alot of young players but their teamwork is exceptional. No one can achieve success alone, the help of others is very needed. Teamwork is one of the greatest skills anyone can possess. The ability to work with other people in achieving a common goal is an important virtue that every organizations look for in their prospective personnel.

Lastly, it is obvious that no one can achieve success without having audacity or faith. In life, we must believe we will succeed, that those plans will succeed. Our world is full of people that achieve great success in life because of their audacity, some of them are Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln, etc.  However, our faith must be based on God and His Word. Pastor Sam Adeyemi described the children of God as "success". We are success not because of what we achieve but, because of "who we are". Those that have God in them are success already. Can God fail? Definitely, No. God cannot fail. So, if God dwells in us as we claim, then we must have faith that we are not failures. Since, faith comes by hearing and by hearing the word of God, I recommend to you to always study the Word of God, wait on God in prayers and study relevant inspiring godly books that will open the eyes of your understanding. Success does not come by easily especially when a first plan is not working out or we experience failure in our endeavour, but with God, persistence, audacity, leadership and teamwork, we can always achieve predictable successes.

Thanks
